The Importance of pH Balance Around The Vagina

The Importance of pH Balance Around The Vagina

A healthy pH balance is crucial for many things in the world, but did you know that a healthy pH balance creates a healthy vagina? Many women don't! Read on to learn what exactly a pH measurement is, and the importance of pH balance around the vagina.

What is pH?

pH is a unit of measurement. It is a number between 0 and 14, and it tells if something is acidic or alkaline. If a pH number is between 0 and 7, the substance is acidic. A pH of 7.1 to 14 is more alkaline, or basic. Everything that is pH-dependent thrives in a "preferred" range, including the vagina.

The Importance of pH Around The Vagina

The normal pH range for the vaginal area is between 3.8 and 4.5, but this can vary a bit with age and where the woman is in her cycle. When the vaginal environment has a pH balance in its normal range, a protective barrier is created. This protective barrier allows for healthy bacteria to stay in place, and keeps harmful bacteria from multiplying at an unhealthy rate. If the pH level rises too much, that protective barrier is broken down, leading to potential overgrowth of harmful bacteria. When too much bad bacteria is present, multiple types of harmful infections can occur. If the vaginal pH drops below 3.8 for an extended period of time, fertility issues can arise.

How To Keep A Balanced Vaginal pH

There are a few key things to do to keep a healthy vaginal environment. First, only use soaps and creams that are made specifically for the vaginal area. Anything else could have ingredients that will not only disrupt the pH, but can also dry out the skin. Formula V For Me Daily Care & Lifting Cream is a great choice for firming and moisturizing the delicate, aging skin of the vulva. It uses all natural ingredients and is specifically formulated to promote a healthy pH.

Second, always clean yourself well after intercourse. Semen is very alkaline and can drastically change the acidic environment of the vagina if left for too long.

Third, take probiotics and/or eat yogurt on a regular basis. Both of these are wonderful for keeping the whole body in balance.

And lastly, don't use a douche. The vagina is a self-cleaning organ, and most douches will disrupt the natural pH. Clean yourself with a mild soap, use vaginal-specific products, and eat a well-balanced diet and you'll probably be okay.

And, like anything else, if you suspect anything is wrong, please consult with your physician!
